These units are very cool when they work, for all the reasons that you've already read about. The problem is, they automatically prompt you when firmware updates are available, and the most recent one (update 1.01.12) has been bricking everyone's units, rendering them totally useless and requiring that they be returned. Most estimates seem to place the figure at 90% failure rate. Western Digital has been totally unhelpful in the matter, requiring customers to pay to ship the unit back and are replacing them with refurbished units.
