This little box does everything that I expected it to, and more.
It comes with a few inconveniences that I hope will be fixed in firmware updates
1. Does not recognize ogg-encoded files named .oga or .ogv
2. Won't play ogg video
3. Displays thumbnails as separate .jpg files when associating them with videos.
The good things about wdtv live:
I installed the firmware upgrade right from the start and didn't experience the bricking problem others are complaining about. I just left it alone for 10 minutes while the upgrade ran.
I am using this box along with a HD Homerun box on my network, and can schedule my Ubuntu machine to record live TV, then play it back later in full 1080i using the WDTV. There isn't a 30 second jump ahead button on the remote to skip past commercials, but they fly by pretty quickly at 16x fast forward.
It will also play the transport stream files from my FTA satellite box directly with a much clearer picture than I get from the satellite box with my TV connected directly to it.
As a test, I downloaded a 1080p movie trailer and played it over the network. Very nice picture! no problems there.
WDTV also works very nicely with Rhythmbox, and will read the playlist files that it creates as long as they are saved in the top-level directory where my music files are stored.
Originally, I was trying to buy a blu-ray player that had these features built in to it, but the Samsung 3600 had too many complaints about network connectivity problems and no .mkv support, and the LG390 was just too expensive. I decided I'm better off with a cheap blu-ray player and a dedicated media player.Get more detail about Western Digital WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN.
